This course explores the development of literature in the Pacific from oral to written literature by Pacific islanders as well as literature written by non-Pacific islanders. Students will also explore the relationship between the Pacific cultures and literature and see how they impact each other in the development of both culture and literature. The exploration of texts will include short stories, novels, poetry and plays. Students will gain the skills through reading, lectures and discussions in groups.

This course deals with the basics of sociolinguistics, which deals with linguistic variability and the social use of language, as well as the relationship between these and language change. It is aimed at giving students an awareness of the causes of variation in languages, and the roles of variation in communication. Students will identify the key concepts, terminologies and theories related to linguistic variation and change, through lectures and active participation in discussions, group work, reflections and take-home-tasks. |
