The management of all the impacts of tourism is essential to allow for tourism developments to be beneficial to all stakeholders and to ultimately be sustainable over indefinite periods of time.
Ideally tourism should also support ‘regeneration’ rather than not do more damage.
Hence, we need to ‘aim for development that meets our needs today, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ Brundtland Report (1987)
The course will assist and challenge you to be able to:
1)Identify and measure selected costs as well as benefits associated with tourism (economic, environmental and socio-cultural);
2)Critically examine the complex nature of tourism impacts (spatial, temporal, secondary and ethical considerations) on destinations and their communities;
3)Explain and critically assess innovative impact assessment and management techniques;
4)Demonstrate effective communication skills.
