This course introduces students to literary studies of English Literature. It will explore the theory and development of literature in English and other cultures. It will examine the main genres of literature, which are prose fiction (novel and short fiction), poetry and drama. The aim of this course is to give students a general knowledge of the different literary genres and their relevance to the aesthetic, cultural, historical and social context. Students will gain the skills through reading in class, lectures and discussions in groups.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Define the structural elements of works of literature that include poetry, prose fiction, and drama;

2. Analyze how literary structural elements and literary devices help create specific meanings and effects; 

3. Display appreciation of works of poetry, fiction, and drama;

4. Work collaboratively with others to promote literature in communities.
